The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR or DAR) was founded in 1890. It is headquartered in Washington, D.C. and welcomes the public to the genealogical library, decorative arts, museum, historic document collection, and concert hall. DAR is a service organization dedicated to promoting historic preservation, education, patriotism, and honoring the patriots of the Revolutionary War. These four ideals are the same today as they were when the organization was founded over 130 years ago. Each year, DAR members provide millions of hours of community service.
DAR members come from a variety of backgrounds and interests, but all share a common bond of having an ancestor who helped contribute to securing the independence of the United States of America. Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution is eligible to join. Patriotic service must have occurred between April 19, 1775 and November 26, 1783.
Currently, there are more than 180,000 members who are members of over 3,000 chapters located in all 50 states, Washington, D.C, and around the world. On October 5, 2019, DAR surpassed a total of one million members who have joined the Society since its founding in 1890. A DAR member is your neighbor, mother, daughter, grandmother, friend, civic leader, your colleague. DAR is you! Please visit the NSDAR national website to learn more.
